Tied the Knot: September 10, 2016

Sydney Peterson, 23, grew up in Paola, Kansas. She earned her nursing degree at UMKC and now works as a labor and delivery nursein Olathe.

Grady Wolford, 26, grew up in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and graduated from Missouri State with a bachelor’s in marketing with an emphasis in advertising and promotions. He works for Miami Lumber Yard in Paola, Kansas, where he and Sydney reside.

Sydney and Grady were introduced by Sydney’s college roommate, who had known him since high school. “We went to Springfield to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and we all stayed at Grady’s apartment,” recalls Sydney. “Grady didn’t say much to me that weekend, but when we all went to a Chiefs’ game about six months later, we finally hit it off.”

Grady used a little subterfuge for his proposal. “We went to dinner for my birthday, and then headed back to our apartment to change before going to celebrate with friends,” Sydney smiles. “Grady sent me to the mailbox to retrieve a package, but the mailbox was empty. When I returned, there was the sweetest letter from Grady taped to our door. I opened the door and there were candles and rose petals everywhere! He was standing in a heart of rose petals. After he asked me to marry him, our entire family walked in and we had drinks and dessert to celebrate! One of the best surprises was when I saw my brother and grandma. My brother had flown in from Chicago and my grandma from Phoenix to be there for the proposal. It was the best surprise ever!”

The blissful couple tied the knot on September 10, 2016, at Mildale Farm in Edgerton, Kansas. The bridal party of 16 consisted of lifelong friends and family members of the couple.

“The venue made our day special. It had two houses on the property, so the wedding party stayed the entire weekend there,” describes Sydney. “Thanks to the houses, our families were able to be with us the entire weekend and all the girls got ready at the house with us. I woke up to a book from my maid of honor. In it were pictures and letters from my parents, brother, Grady and all the bridesmaids.

“One of our favorite parts of the day was when we read our vows. Grady didn’t want to read them at the ceremony because it made him too nervous. Yet we weren’t seeing each other before I walked down the aisle. We stood on opposite sides of a door so we couldn’t see each other but we could hear each other reading our vows. It was such a good idea, because it calmed our nerves before the ceremony and still allowed us to write our own vows.”

Sydney and Grady honeymooned at Sandals in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, taking the vacation of a lifetime, one that they will never forget. ■
