Monica and Ryan Quinn

By  0 Comments

Monica (Duke) Quinn is a Kansas Citian, born and raised. After college in Wisconsin, she returned to Kansas City for medical school and finished her pediatric residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital. She’s in her second year of fellowship in pediatric critical care at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Ryan Joseph Quinn grew up in Kansas and Missouri, attending K-State for undergrad in finance and Baker University for an MBA. Currently he’s in his second year as a treasury analyst at Fiserv, a financial technology company near Atlanta, Georgia.

“Ryan and I met years after we should have,” shares Monica. “We grew up in the same area, and even went to the same grade school for a year. In college, we had mutual friends, and he ended up in the same fraternity as a friend of mine. That friend married my best friend, and we met in 2013 at their wedding!”

Monica and Ryan dated through her residency, and when she matched at Emory University in Atlanta, they knew they had six months in KC before moving. “We planned to go to restaurants or attractions we’d never been to for the remainder of our time in KC,” Monica smiles. “That March, he planned a night on the town, but told me it would be a surprise. We went to Webster House for dinner; after dinner, he mentioned going to get a drink at an undisclosed location. On the way, we walked past the Kauffman Center, and Ryan proposed to me in the front drive. I might have cried in this moment, but pure excitement won out and I ended up screaming like a lunatic. Eventually, I got out ‘Yes,’ and the security guards were assured that there was no crime being committed. The scene was recorded by his brother and cousin, who were there incognito to capture the moment. Afterwards, we walked to the Marriott for celebratory champagne, where our friends, whose wedding we met at, also surprised us.”

The blissful couple tied the knot April 22, 2017. “We had a big wedding party of our siblings and best friends,” Monica laughs. “There were eight bridesmaids, eight groomsmen and four ushers. Coming home for the wedding, we wanted to have a big reunion with all of our friends, and that’s exactly what it felt like.

“We wanted our wedding day to feel as relaxed and fun as possible for a large, traditional Catholic wedding. Though everything was perfect, it was also perfectly us,” notes Monica. “With guidance from our amazing vendors, we made all the decisions, from food to transportation to décor. We wanted a lot of personal touches, and we made these ourselves, even the spray-painted dinosaurs.

“The wedding itself was a wonderful blur. My dad and stepfather walked me down the aisle in the church my dad and Ryan attended as children. I still smile from ear to ear thinking about the dance floor. Having our friends and family in one place to celebrate with us was a big, happy, beautiful dream come true”

Monica and Ryan honeymooned in Kauai, Hawaii, going on once-in-a-lifetime adventures.
