Megan & Richard Tie The Knot

Megan (Hicks) Alspaugh, 24, was born and raised in Olathe, Kansas. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Kansas and a master’s degree at the University of Missouri Kansas City. Megan is now an individual and family therapist at Gillis in Kansas City, Missouri.

Richard Alspaugh, 29, was born in Chandler, Arizona and moved to Overland Park, Kansas, at the age of 7. Richard attended the University of Kansas to earn his bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in business. He walked on to the Jayhawk football team as a defensive end. Richard is now a regional sales manager with Victaulic. Megan and Richard have just moved into their new home in Lenexa, Kansas.

Megan and Richard remember the date they met, April 13, 2013. He was in Lawrence, visiting for the spring scrimmage football game. Megan was living in Lawrence, spending the day celebrating football. That evening they went out on the town with their friends and the two groups met at Tonic. After a few compliments and a Grey Goose cocktail, Megan and Rich hit it off. They exchanged numbers, and Megan played hard to get over the next couple of weeks. Their first date was at Blue Moose; Richard asked Megan to be his girlfriend during the Pub Crawl for Cancer on June 1, 2013. At the Lenexa BBQ June 27, 2013, they confessed their love for each other. Over the next year their relationship blossomed.

Richard planned his proposal well. On July 31, 2014, he took Megan to dinner at Classic Cup before the Justin Timberlake concert. The concert tickets were birthday gifts to each other, as they share birthdays on March 14. After being served by a very nervous waiter who knew the whole plan, Richard got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Megan was shocked, as Richard had appeared so calm and relaxed throughout the evening. With a grand smile, she said “Yes!” Secret photos were taken and a surprise limo pulled up to take them to the concert.

The blissful couple tied the knot on November 14, 2015. Megan’s Maid of Honor was Emily Manning; bridesmaids were her sister, Lauren Hicks, and Kelsey Heenan, Sami Leitner and Colleen Young. Megan’s younger sister, Tatum, served as flower girl. Richard’s Best Man was his brother, Patrick Alspaugh; groomsmen were Grey Otey, Drew Eanes, Sam Evans and Kyle Kidwell. Serving as ushers were Garrett Schwede and Zach Miller.

“Rich and I did not see each other from the end of our rehearsal dinner until our first look moment right before the ceremony,” shares Megan. “For our first dance, we took private lessons from Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Lenexa. Our dance was a rumba taught to us by Amy. We enjoyed the lessons and have great photos of our first dance.”

Megan and Richard honeymooned on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, a tropical and intimate location, where they explored the many beaches, national park and took excursions to the British Virgin Islands. HLM
