Brenda Smith, MD: Improve your health at midlife

  1.  I am confused by all the different bioidentical hormone therapies available. What type do you recommend?
  2. Since I began prescribing bioidentical hormones in 1993, many different therapies have emerged. Bioidentical hormones should be administered through the skin, not swallowed. I like hormone creams or patches that deliver steady, predictable hormone levels, in my years of experience, this delivery system results in the best and safest relief of symptoms. I do not like hormone pellets or shots. This unfortunate trend results in high hormone levels followed by low hormone levels before the next shot or pellet is administered. This causes unpredictable relief of symptoms and the high levels increase the risks associated with hormone therapy.

  1.  What is your most important advice for women with declining health at midlife?
  2. Midlife is a time in life when you can develop a whole checklist of health complaints. To improve your health at midlife it is very important to look at all aspects of your health. Hormones, such as ovarian, thyroid, adrenal and pancreatic, are all important to investigate. Immune system health, brain neurotransmitters, nutrition, toxin exposure and lifestyle are also important pieces of your health puzzle. Get a proper, in-depth evaluation of your health if you want to feel better faster. HLM
