Janet & Ron

Janet Ann Mettler and Ron Maxwell have taken the long road and circuitous path to their wedding day, and they both feel that the journey has made them true soul mates.
Janet has three children and has been a day care provider for 22 years. She loves animals, and she and her groom make their home with three cats, two dogs, a rabbit and a lizard. Ron (Max) Maxwell has three children and has been a police officer for 27 years, with 23 of those years in Stockton. He enjoys motorcycle riding, a hobby that contributed to his meeting Janet 10 years ago.

“Even though we were both living in Stockton, we met in Reno at Street Vibrations in 2004,” shares Janet. “Ron and my brother Mike were good friends, and they had ridden their Harleys up. My sister in law and I drove up in her car and we met in the parking lot at the Grand Sierra Resort. It was love at first sight for both of us, but the timing wasn’t right for a relationship, so we spent time hanging out and becoming good friends and eventually started dating. Not long after, Ron found out he had a brain tumor. Not wanting to put me through what might lie ahead, he broke things off. It broke both of our hearts, but we both still loved each other tremendously.

“About two years ago he decided that he wanted me in his life no matter what, and we started dating again for good. In May 2013 he took me on a ‘two-mile hike’ to Feather River Falls in his hometown of Oroville and it turned out to be eight very strenuous miles! Afterward, he confessed that he hadn’t done it since he was 16, and apparently it ‘seemed like two miles’ back then. By the end it felt like my body was giving out and I was absolutely dying! When we finished that tough hike, he said he wanted to take me somewhere else before the sun went down. Since sundown and our destination were both about a half an hour away, he drove at very high speeds down the extremely winding road leaving the falls. That was not good for my already upset stomach and shaking and worn out body! I had never gotten car sick before but I had to have him pull over for a very unromantic and embarrassing stop! We arrived just as the sun was setting at the spot where 30 years ago Ron had asked God to help him find true love, and he got down on one knee and proposed!”

The blissful couple tied the knot on August 17, 2014. Janet’s Matron of Honor was Holly Mettler-Molen, and bridesmaids were Hailee Mettler-Lang, Jennifer Mettler and Armida Maxwell. Ron’s Best Man was Sheldon Michael Mettler, Jr., and groomsmen were Brook Gifford, Rob Young, Brian Cable and Richard Van Over. Chelsea Mettler and Adeline Riordan served as flower girls and Ty Molen and Blake Molen were ring bearers.

“The bridesmaids and I spent the night before at University Plaza Hotel,” notes Janet. “We got ready at the hotel and took a limo to Morris Chapel. We wrote our own vows, and my poor daughter who was a bridesmaid had waked up with the flu and had to leave during the ‘I do’s’ but everything was beautiful! Afterward we went back to University Plaza Waterfront Hotel for our reception. The food was fabulous, and everything was amazing! Everyone helped make our day perfect!”

Janet and Ron plan a belated honeymoon at some point in the future; she promises that it will involve sand, ocean, palm trees and tropical drinks with umbrellas!
