Amy and RJ Aitken

Tied the Knot: November 24, 2018

Sparks didn’t fly the first time Amy and RJ met six years ago as volunteer camp counselors. But in 2017, Amy moved to Davis, California, after college. She was starting a new job, hardly knew anyone, and had downloaded Coffee Meets Bagel, a dating app. “The very first person I was matched with was RJ and I instantly recognized him,” Amy laughs. “About a week later we went on our first date and we have been together ever since.”

Amy (Flowers) Aitken, 24, graduated in May 2017 from Azusa Pacific University where she studied social work. When RJ and Amy are not working, they love to travel; so far, they’ve been to 17 countries and over 30 states. Amy and RJ live in Stockton.

RJ Aitken, 27, moved to Stockton in 2009 to attend University of the Pacific and stayed. He completed a degree in sports management and pursued seminary post college. He quickly decided to do an abrupt career change when he felt called to law enforcement. He has been employed with Stockton Police Department ever since and loves that he gets to make a difference in the city of Stockton every day.

RJ was very sneaky with his proposal. “I had given him very little direction as to what I wanted,” Amy smiles. “I was leaving for a month in Europe the following week and wasn’t expecting a proposal for another couple of months. Little to my knowledge, RJ had already asked for my mother’s blessing and had gotten my friends and family in on the plan. We went up to our family cabin in Strawberry, California, and he proposed to me in an amazing lookout point during a hike around a lake. I had never told RJ this, but I had always dreamed of getting engaged in Strawberry, as it is my favorite place in the world.”

The blissful couple tied the knot during Thanksgiving weekend on November 24, 2018. Amy’s Maid of Honor was Michelle Hirano and her Matron of Honor was Lauren Flowers; bridesmaids were Katie Craig, Arbela Ternian, Breanna Navarro and Victoria Gervacio. RJ’s brother, Colin Aitken, was his Best Man; groomsmen were Ryan Hekman, Harrison Westbrook, Daniel Episcope, Trevor Feliciano, Steven Flowers and Dennis Flowers.

“We got married in Hood, California, at the Willow Ballroom, and the weather was perfect!” Amy shares. “We wanted our wedding day to be personal and interactive for our guests, so we made our guests answer trivia questions about us correctly before being excused for dinner.”

Amy and RJ escaped to the warmth of Cabo for their honeymoon, where they could indulge their love for a good taco and margarita.
