Synowicki’s Jewel Box: Fifty Years of Putting Sparkle in People’s Lives

For more than five decades, Central Valley couples have trusted Synowicki’s when choosing engagement or wedding rings that celebrate a special milestone in their lives.

Founded by local resident Walter “Wally” Synowicki, this flourishing company has been providing gemstone seekers with exceptional quality and expertise since the mid-1960s. Born in Canada, Walter moved with his family to the Lodi area in 1958 and began making a name for himself as a watch repair expert. Setting up shop in a tiny space next to Sell-Rite Grocery store in 1967, the elder Synowicki kept himself busy and his family fed by doing trade work for area jewelers. During those early years, the business was simply known as the Jewel Box, but as word of his talent and skill spread, Walter opted to move to a larger storefront on Pine Street. At that time the name Synowicki was added to the Jewel Box name to create the brand that Central Valley residents are familiar with today.

A Gem of a Business
The shop moved again in 2002 to its current location on School Street to gain visibility and reach a new customer base. At that time, the business also expanded its offerings to include fine jewelry along with its repair services. To date, Synowicki’s Jewel Box offers shoppers over 2,000 square feet of exquisite gems, engagement and wedding rings, colored stones, sparkling diamonds, pendants, bracelets, pearls, breathtaking sterling silver pieces and Seiko and Citizen watches.

After many years of bringing smiles to the faces of the customers who entered his establishment, Walter retired and handed the reins of the business over to his youngest son, Brian, in 2010. “This business has been family owned and operated for 50 years,” Brian observed. “At various times my brother, brother-in-law and other family members have worked here. I am proud to be part of that legacy as well, and I have been working behind the counter of Synowicki’s since I was 19.

“I am incredibly proud that Synowicki’s has been open for as long as it has and I think that longevity speaks volumes. We, without a doubt, would not be where we are today without the loyalty of our customers. They are like family to us and we are excited to now see second and third generations coming back to us for their jewelry needs.”

Friendliness and Service
Whether it’s making a special purchase for a wedding or anniversary or ordering a custom-designed jewelry piece “just because,” customers who stop in the store are greeted by a welcoming, tranquil atmosphere and pristine display cases filled with sparking delights. Though the variety and affordability of their pieces keep customers coming back for more, Brian is quick to point out that his employees are also a vital part of the business’ success.

The Synowicki staff includes office manager Pete Graffigna, sales associates Frank Eisner and Barbara Ross and veteran staff member Christi McClure, who has been doing sales and purchasing for the company for more than 17 years. Assistant jeweler Petru Colfescu, with 27 years of experience, assists Brian in the shop. Together, Brian and his team work tirelessly to support the business’ vision of stellar customer service paired with exceptional jewelry options and designs.
